Date palm harvesting is aproaching in Siwa





For the next three months most of the people in Siwa will be harvesting the dates. The people of Siwa Oasis have been growing dates for 3,000 years. There are many varieties of Siwa dates. Three of the most important varieties are Siwi, Azzawi, and Frehi. But there are three more varieties which are produced in small quantities and are at risk of extinction: Ghazaal, Takdat, and Amnzou.

Photo Album: Saidi Baker Makes Bread Overnight In Siwa Oasis





A "Saidi" Baker makes and sells bread overnight in the market of Siwa.
The Oasis is considered as one of the rich areas in Egypt. So workers from other parts of the country usually migrate to Siwa for work opportunities.
"Seidi" people are called the Egyptians who come from Upper Egypt, that is the areas around the big cities of Asyut, Sohag, Minya up to Luxor and Aswan.

"Lipsís": A delicious Siwan dessert


In Siwi language it is pronounced as: Lipsís and it is made from palm tree dates and flour. It is accompanied with tea or coffee.
It is also an old custom tradition to eat Lipsís in order to celebrate a new born baby of the Siwan family, on the 7th day after the birth.
